Glasgow ESOL Forum initially received a grant from the Home Office Challenge Fund to establish English Language Teaching training courses for Volunteer Tutors. The training and administration of the project is now funded by the Big Lottery Fund. We now recruit and train both qualified and non qualified volunteer ESOL tutors and there are different training courses available for each group. So far, twelve courses have been completed for non-qualified volunteer tutors at Anniesland College, Langside College and Glasgow University. The courses run over eight weeks on a one evening per week basis. This initial training course is specifically designed to enable volunteer tutors to teach English to refugees and asylum seekers in the community, either as classroom assistants or on a one-to-one basis. Other Volunteer Tutors provide support with English on demand at drop-ins or other services for refugees and asylum seekers. A fast track training is offered to CELTA or Trinity TESOL qualified tutors (or those currently studying toward their CELTA or Trinity TESOL) who wish to join the project. This course involves a total of 6 hours of training, either on two evenings or one Saturday, at Applejak Studios. We currently run 2-3 training courses per year plus 2 fast track courses, with 20 places on each course. If you would like to become a Volunteer Tutor you can apply online.
